Screening and assisting children with reading and learning difficulties

bw-small.jpg

As many as one in ten children may suffer from reading or learning difficulties. Many of these children have visual problems which contribute to, or cause, these difficulties.

Early recognition and correction of any visual problems may greatly assist the child in getting back on track.

Visual problems contributing to reading difficulties may include:

=  Short or long-sightedness

=  Astigmatism

=  Eye muscle imbalance and spasm

=  Poor contrast perception

=  Eye disease

Visual problems may compound the learning difficulties in autistic and hyperactive children. Early identification and management of visual problems will give your child every chance of achieving their potential.

Aviation Optical offers a screening service for children who may have reading or learning difficulties.  We provide thorough, accurate and comprehensive visual assessment to identify and rectify any visual disturbance that might be your child's obstacle to progression.

Our assessment of your child is undertaken systematically and carefully to get to the root of any visual problem.  At first consultation, in addition to a thorough eye test, our optometrist will assess: ocular health; visual acuity and muscle balance.  We will advise you if glasses are required and if so, we will make sure that we dispense the most suitable and cost-efficient frame and lenses.

During the first appointment we will also begin to determine whether specialist visual aids will benefit your child's reading ability.  These are often coloured overlays or softly tinted lenses which may help them with reading and writing. Some children will benefit from these; some will not.  Accurate diagnosis may require several appointments (at least four) as accuracy in any visual correction is achieved by a process of elimination.  We will finalise the process by conducting a colorimetry test to fine-tune the accuracy of any lens correction that may be required.

Reports on your child's reading progress will be prepared for you, your GP, Health Visitor or school.

We stock a good range of budget and designer frames for children. Once prescribed, our staff will make sure that these are carefully and accurately fitted.
